Orkney tops poll as ideal place to live

Orkney has retained the title of the best place to live in Scotland and is the second most popular location for the whole of the UK according to a new survey.

Skara Brae

So why are these islands off the north coast of Scotland so popular? Well crime rates are the lowest in the UK, with a burglary rate of just 2.3 per 10,000 people, compared to a Scottish average of 27.2 and 28.7 for the rest of the UK.

School children on Orkney also benefit from the UK’s largest spending per pupil for primary and secondary children – £9,281 per pupil compared to Scotland’s average of £5,846.90 and £4,626 for the UK.

A friend of mine recently moved there with her husband and four children and one of the main reasons was the quality of the education.

Orkney is a wonderful place to visit with highlights including the prehistoric village of Skara Brae. Obviously the people who built that village were ahead of their time!
